The hospital was opened as Berkeley Cottage Hospital in 1877 under the management of Lady Fitzhardinge, but in 1886 changed its name to Berkeley Hospital and was placed under a committee chaired by Lord & Lady Fitzhardinge. By 1897 the hospital had 12 beds, and these were augmented by the provision of four almshouses adjoining the hospital in 1899. The number of beds in the hospital proper had declined, to 9 by 1931, and stood at only 12 in 1939. After nationalization in 1948 the hospital was taken over by the Southmead Hospital Management Committee, and has since been extended, although the restricted site has made extensive enlargements impossible. The hospital is still in use (1983)
