Description

'Ali 'Adil Shah II of Bijapur (1656-72). Bijapur, c.1660-70. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Numbered 9 in Persian inventory note. Gouache with gold; on an album page with fawn and plain borders. 116 by 98 mm; page 372 by 252 mm. 'Ali 'Adil Shah II of Bijapur, facing half left, sits against a floral gold bolster, smoking. He wears a transparent jama over orange trousers, and his gold turban is streaked with magenta. Note: A portrait of 'Ali 'Adil Shah II which can be attributed to the same painter is in the Prince of Wales Museum, Bombay, previously in the possession of Dr Moti Chandra (illustrated in colour in Barrett (1960)).
