INTRODUCTION
This volume of Additional Manuscripts (Add Mss) has in general been compiled on the lines indicated in the Introduction to the first, apart from the modification in the detail given for maps, referred to in the Introduction to the fourth
Once again deeds of title predominate but there will also be found documents, mainly correspondence, relating to the politician Richard Cobden and the Cobden family (Add Mss 5546 and 5547, 6009-6076, 6078 and 6079), warrants, addresses and diplomas presented to Dr. G. K. A. Bell, Bishop of Chichester (Add Mss 5922-5935), personal papers of William Groome and of the d'Allain family (Add Mss 5548-5555, 5557-5559), pedigrees of the Hambleton and Peachey families (Add Mss 5606, 5607), letters patent of William Gratwicke as Sheriff of Sussex (Add Mss 6003), an unpublished poem by William Hayley (Add Mss 5995), a lawyer's account and solicitor's precedent books (Add Mss 5498, 5499-5503), papers relating to roads and railways (Add Mss 5936-5964) and records of the Chichester City Club (Add Mss 5504-5545, 5749). The documents range in date from a court roll of the Manor of Goring, 1450 (Add Mss 5548) to a list of subscribers to a parting gift from the Diocese of Chichester to Dr. and Mrs. Bell, 1957 (Add Mss 5935)
Students are again asked to exercise care in quoting references, and to use the form indicated in the Introduction to the first volume
