Administrative / biographical background

A County Infirmary was officially opened in 1938 at the Louth Public Assistance Institution in High Holme Road, formerly the Louth Union Workhouse, and took over the existing infirmary functions of the Institution. The Infirmary was administered by the Public Assistance Committee of the Lindsey County Council until the creation of the National Health Service in 1948. The name was later changed from County Infirmary to County Hospital.

The London Road Hospital was opened in 1942 as a scabies hospital, administered by the County Infirmary. After 1946 the premises were converted to a nurses' home.
