A letter to Mr. Francis Hutcheson concerning the spring of benevolence and an examination of his notions of the deity and our passions, as deliverd by him in his Enquiry into Moral Good and Evil, his Illustrations of his moral sense, and his Essay on the Nature and Conduct of the Passions and Affections'. An anonymous work, dated 'Fort St. George in East India 20 June 1743'. A response to the work of Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746), moral philosopher. Hutcheson published: 'An inquiry into the original of our ideas of beauty and virtue: in two treatises. I. Concerning beauty, order, harmony, design. II. Concerning moral good and evil' (London, 1725). 'An essay on the nature and conduct of the passions and affections: with illustrations on the moral sense' (London, 1728). pp. i-iv. Flyleaves. At p. i. is a note explaining that this volume is a draft of a fuller work [now Sion L40.2/E35]. pp. v-vi. Title page and notes intended for a printer. pp. vii-viii. Dedication letter. Fort St. George 20 June 1743. Dedicatee 'The Reverend Mr. -' not named. pp. ix-xxvii. Preface. In the preface the author states that he may possibly remain in India for some years. He describes himself as one whose life has not afforded much time for speculation; literature is not his profession, and he has no pretensions to learning. pp. 1-136. Text. Dated 'Fort St. George in East India 20 June 1743'. Begins: 'Having lately on my passage to this place...'
