Administrative / biographical background

The Freetown Mission was established under the auspices of the Bury and District Congregational Board in 1906, a corrugated iron building being erected in Kay Street in 1909. The Mission was run by a superintendent and management committee, pastoral oversight being provided by ministers of those churches within the Board's area. In 1938, deacons were appointed, and the Mission became a church in its own right. At the current time (September 1994) the Mission is scheduled to close and the congregation will merge with that of Bury United Reformed Church
