Description

This file consists of papers relating to the visit of the Punjabi dramatist Gursharan Singh and his theatre group Amritsar Natak Kala Kendar to Britain, and their tour of various venues in the UK in the summer of 1995, organised by the Indian Workers Association.

Material includes:

/1-/4 correspondence with the High Commission of the United Kingdom relating to visitor entry certificates for the theatre group and information about the personal details and passport numbers of individuals

/5-/8 correspondence and information circulars issued by the Indian Workers Association to members and supporters discussing arrangements for the tour, including details of the venues the theatre group will perform at, and a synopsis of the plays to be performed

/9-/16 sequence of flyers and posters in English and Punjabi issued by Indian Workers Association local branches giving information about performances in venues including Ilford, Glasgow, Southall, Smethwick, Nuneaton, and Bradford

/17-/18 photocopies of newspaper articles published in the 'Leicester Mercury' 25 July 1995 and the 'New Worker' reporting on the Gursharan Singh tour

/19-/25 statements of expenses for the drama group tour together with handwritten lists giving tour dates and venue addresses, blank evaluation forms for performers to complete in order to provide feedback to the Indian Workers Association about the organisation of the tour and certificates awarded by the Indian Workers Association to the Amritsar Natak Kala Kendar for their performances

/26-/30 correspondence between Avtar Jouhl and members of the Commission for Racial Equality [CRE] discussing a meeting between this organisation and Gursharan Singh and the possibility of the CRE working with the Indian Workers Association on a programme of drama performances and workshops around the theme of race and young people in contemporary Britain to promote its anti-discrimination message, following discussions with Ranjit Sondhi, July-August 1995, together with a blank application form for grant aid from the Commission for Racial Equality

/31-/32 Indian Workers Association reports on the conclusion of the drama tour, including copy of 'IWA News' newsletter 10 August 1995 and a copy of the General Secretary's report to the Central Executive Committee meeting 18 February 1996 which includes a section on the success of the tour

The file also includes a small number of flyers and posters in English and Punjabi advertising performances by Gursharan Singh's group in Winnipeg, and a larger amount of correspondence, flyers and associated material in Punjabi concerning the drama tour
