Description (What the record is about)
-
This series comprises accounts and similar material physically in the form of books. Where possible cross references have been made to series of accounts among the letters and papers in the various sections of the Wentworth Woodhouse Muniments, but anyone wishing to make a thorough search of this type of material is advised to search the summary lists of all sections.
The bulk of the volumes relate to the Wentworth estates, i.e. the estates of the WENTWORTH family and their successors the WATSON-WENTWORTHs. There is a smaller section relating to the estates inherited from the BRIGHT family. A third group, scarcely represented here, relates to the FITZWILLIAM estates in Northamptonshire and else-where, together with the Northamptonshire estates inherited from the WATSONs.
The account books are of interest from several angles. They provide, first, an excellent picture of estate management during the period c.1750 - 1850 when the Stewards: Benjamin Hall and the two Birams were in control; secondly, information on a variety of subjects relating to the household and house at Wentworth (and also in London), from servants to pictures; thirdly, the various order books, ledgers etc. give detailed information of products of firms from which the family and estate made their purchases.
