The series of Selections from the records were used by the governments in India for the publication of papers intended for circulation among officials and also to be made available to the public. The series were at first envisaged as being appropriate for documents too brief or otherwise unsuited for separate publication, but each government quickly adapted its series for its own purposes and in some cases regularly included substantial reports or collections of correspondence.
