Gallantry Notes: MC: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of machine guns. He got his guns into action immediately on the close of a very heavy bombardment, causing very heavy losses to the enemy. He continually moved his guns according to the situation under heavy fire, and by his courage and qualities of leadership, contributed very largely to the complete defeat of the enemy attack.;
Other Data: Original Citation - 55 Div Records (Liverpool Libraries): "On April 18th (1918) when the enemy heavily attacked at Festubert this officer was in charge of the machine guns at FESTUBERT KEEP. He displayed the greatest coolness and resource getting his guns into action immediately on the close of a very heavy bombardment and causing very heavy losses to the enemy. He continuously shifted the positions of the guns according to the situation under heavy rifle and machine gun fire and by his disregard of danger and qualities of leadership contributed very largely to the defeat of the enemy attack. (Immediate Award) recommended by Lt Col JLF Tweedie, Cdg 1 Bn Glos Regt & Brig HHS Morant Cdg 3 Inf Bde. Signed E Williams, Maj Gen, Cdg 1 Div.
