Description (What the record is about)
-
Bound copy measuring 325 x 255 mm of a printed work (originally published in soft covers), this copy interleaved with blank sheets onto which photographs are loosely corner mounted with pencilled captions beneath. The photographs relate directly to the subject matter of the book, which gives brief anthropological surveys of the major hill tribes of the Shan States, and consist of ethnographical portraits of individuals and groups of Upper Burma. Although the prints are small, the quality of the photographs themselves is generally good. The following is a broad outline of the subjects covered in the volume: ceremonal pavilion erected for the Prince of Wales's visit in 1922 (prints 1–5); Mongwa Awaya's wife, a Hkun, at Keng Tung (print 2); Shan pakondans (pedlars) carrying large loads, Hsipaw (print 7); the Palaung village of Hinhpok, Hsipaw (print 8); Hsipaw officials and the Sawbwa of Hsipaw (prints 9–10); leg-rowers on Inle Lake (prints 13, 15); Nampan Bazaar (print 17); Padauns at Mandalay, 1916 (print 21); Gaunghtos and Brés (prints 23–26); return of the Sawbwa to Keng Tung from Wan Ping (print 36); Palaung girls at Keng Tung (print 37); various Palaung types (prints 38–44); Wa groups (prints 45, 47); En group at Keng Tung (print 46); Lihsaw group, Tawngpeng (print 50); Tai (Shan) groups (prints 52–54).
