Title

Pedigree on parchment, 9 x 27in., reciting the descent of the kings of England from the Heptarchy and of the Dukes of Normandy from Rollo.

Date

N.d. [15th cent.]

Description

The seven lines of descent join at the time of their absorption into the house of Wessex. Names are written in double red circles connected by green and red lines. From the time of Alfred the places and dates of coronation and sepulture are inserted.

It is notable that the kingdom of Kent is placed first on the left at the head of the document and is followed by the Sussex dynasty.

Physical condition

The document has been cut or split across after the entry for Edgar and the remainder is missing. Spaces for the illumination of the capital letters to the inserted notes have been left blank, but this suggests the work of a monastic or cathedral scriptorium.
