Description (What the record is about)
-
Bretgate, or Little Bretgate as it was sometimes known to distinguish it from the other Bretgate (modern Market Street and Jubbergate) in the centre of the city, was in the parish of St Margaret, Walmgate, and the name has recently been revived in a modern housing development. The messuage belonging to the Hospital lay in breadth between the land of the prior and convent of Kirkham and that of Nicholas de Northfolk, and in length from the street of Little Bretgate in front as far as the city walls of York at the back.
Note: The release by Cristiana daughter of Thomas de Thurkelby of York to William de Abbathia dated 6 Nov. 1315 (calendared in Yorks Deeds ii no. 539) is at the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, Leeds, MD.7. A photocopy is placed with this collection of deeds
