L. Carr with 'The Battle of Pollocks Crossing', published by Viking,Doris Lessing with 'The Good Terrorist', published by Cape,Jan Morris with 'Last Letters from Hav', published by Viking, andIris Murdoch with 'The Good Apprentice', published by Chatto & Windus.The Judges were Norman St John-Stevas (Chair), Nina Bawden, J. W. Lambert, Joanna Lumley, and Marina Warner.
