In 1904 Miss Eliot, a member of the nursing profession, left a bequest of £600 in her will for the establishment of a cottage hospital. Premises were found in Ashenground Road and a cottage hospital was opened in 1906.
In 1912 the cottage hospital was removed to new buildings in Butlers Green Road on a site given by Captain C.W. Sergison and Sir James Bradford. The hospital was named the King Edward VII and Eliot Memorial Cottage Hospital. A new wing was opened in 1916. In 1926-8 a separate nurses' home was erected, also a chapel, kitchen departments a private block, women's surgical wards, an operating theatre block, and massage and X-ray departments.
In July 1988, under the National Health Services Act, the Hospital Board of Management was dissolved and the administration of the hospital was taken over by the Mid Sussex Hospital Management Committee. In 1974 this was succeeded by Crawley and Cuckfield District Health Authority, later re-named Mid Downs District Health Authority.
