Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)
-
The hospital developed from the Caistor Institution (formerly the Caistor Union Workhouse), which was administered from 1930 by the Public Assistance Committee of Lindsey County Council. The Institution was converted in 1931 to house mentally handicapped patients, and became the Caistor Certified Institution. In April 1937 the premises were transferred to the Lincolnshire Joint Board for the Mentally Defective. Patients were temporarily transferred to the Holbeach Institution in 1937 while the premises at Caistor were modernised, returning in January 1938. The Institution was sometimes known in the 1940s as the Caistor Branch of the Harmston Hall Colony. In 1948 the Institution was taken over by the National Health Service and became Caistor Hospital. The hospital was administered by the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board Lincoln No. 3 Hospital Management Committee, 1948-c1968, the Lincoln Heath Hospital Management Committee (still part of the Sheffield Regional Hospital Boad), c1969-1974, the Lincolnshire Area Health Authority, 1974-1984, and finally by the Grimsby Health Authority. The hospital was closed in 1990.
