Administrative / biographical background

In 1170 the manors of Clifton and Salwick were in the possession of Walter son of Osbert, whose son William was the first to take the surname Clifton. It may well be that at the same date the manor of Westby-with-Plumpton was also held by the family, though it is not specifically mentioned in the documents until the early 1200s. In 1606 the manors of Lytham and Little Marton were acquired by purchase while the manor and rectory of Kirkham were held on lease from the Dissolution until the 19th century. Settlements made on marriages with the Molyneuxes of Sefton have resulted in documents relating to that family being found among the Clifton muniments.
