These files represent what survives of the annual files of the Accountant General's Department between 1926-1956, aside from what was made into collections (see IOR/L/AG/29/1/28-). Although there are a small number of files dealing with other topics the great majority (about 95%) comprise the estate papers of deceased officers of the Indian Army, especially those who were killed on active service in World War II, whether in North Africa, Europe, or South East Asia. These estate papers may be regarded as an extension 1938-1953 of the series Military Estate Papers, IOR/L/AG/34/40, 1849-1937. They contain not only estate accounts (with occasional wills) but also details of an officer's military service. Since proper service files are often missing for officers who died on active service the estate papers may constitute the main source of career information. A descriptive list of IOR/L/AG/29/1/210-261 is available and may be consulted upon request. IOR/L/AG/29/2/106 comprises an index in rough alphabetical order to the estate papers for 1943-1947.
