516. Clarke Maze & Co., Bristol (MT & MZ). Apr.-Jun., Aug., Oct. 1837, Feb., Apr., Sep. 1838, Sep., Nov. 1839, Dec. 1845, Nov. 1860. 23 items.
Two 80 horse power double-acting crank engines, with 44 inch cylinders, 7 foot strokes, parallel motions, [cast iron beams, cast iron connecting rods].

Reverse plan and sections of the engine and boiler houses and boilers, original of cross-section, plan of the tunnel; coloured plan and elevation of the boiler house, Nov. 1839; fly shaft boss - coloured full size section (not coded, brought to Soho by William Bennett); working gear plummer block, air pump, condenser and hot water cistern - partially coloured reverse drawings; plans and sections of designs for cast iron stairs and railings for the cylinder platform and spring beam floor - treads, risers etc. (not coded); "Memoranda for 80 horse 7 ft. stroke engines for Clarke Acramans Maze & Co." - notes on J. B. Clarke's order of 27 Feb. and Wren & Bennett's drawings sent 14 Jun. 1837. The drawings bear letter codes unless otherwise noted.
Drawings sent by Wren & Bennett: elevation and partial section of the mill, ground plan of the 2 tunnels, longitudinal section of the engine house, coloured plan and section of the engine and boiler houses showing 2 sets of 3 boilers. These drawings were numbered by Wren & Bennett.
Also coloured tracing of plan of the premises and surrounding land, Sep. 1839, copied from an original by William Evans, builder, Coronation Road, Bristol - shows mills, rooms, yards, foundry, school room, 20 horse engine by the mechanics' shops, 3 80 horse engines by the main mill rooms, 60 horse engine by the scutching room (crossed out); another coloured plan on tracing paper of the premises and surrounding land - less detailed than the above.
Also the following later drawings: back plates for engine MZ, Dec. 1845; second motion shaft and plummer blocks "for the twin 80 horse engines", Nov. 1860.

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 910. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 110.

For Clarke Maze & Co. Great Western Cotton Works, Bristol. The engines were ordered by J. B. Clarke, when the firm was called Clarke Acramans Maze & Co. The firm became Clarke Maze & Co. during 1837, and was also sometimes referred to as the Great Western Cotton Co. See Portfolio 5/521 for a third 80 horse engine for the main mill and a 60 horse engine for the scutching works, and Portfolio 5/836 for a 24 horse engine for the bleaching works. By Nov. 1860 the firm had become Bush Ames & Co. and by 1872 it was The Great Western Cotton Co.
