The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence and minutes, which are enclosures to an extract of a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, dated 25 July 1849. A copy of this letter can be found at IOR/F/4/2343/123024. The item relates to a newly published Act of British Parliament concerning the suppression of the 'slave trade' [trade in enslaved people]. A mistake in the preamble of the Act is discussed by the Government of India and the Government of Bombay. Copies of the Act are sent out by the latter to: Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf; Stafford Bettesworth Haines, Political Agent at Aden; and Atkins Hamerton, Her Majesty's Consul and Company's Agent in the Dominions of His Highness the Imam [Imām] of Muscat. Copies and instructions are also sent out to legal representatives within the Bombay administration, as well as to Commodore Stephen Lushington, Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Navy. The title page of the item contains the following references: 'Bombay Political Department', 'Draft No. 189 of 1850', 'Vol: 3', 'Collection No 1 of No 64', and 'Examiner's Office'.
