The Church Society was founded in 1950 by merger of the Church Association (founded 1865) and the National Church League (founded 1906). The National Church League was an amalgamation of the National Protestant Church Union (founded 1893) and the Church of England League (founded 1904, formerly the Ladies' League, 1899). Other predecessor bodies include the Protestant Association (founded 1835) and the Protestant Education Institute (founded 1870). The Society's aim is to seek to maintain the evangelical faith of the Church of England based on Holy Scripture, the Thirty-Nine Articles and the Book of Common Prayer. Continues to publish books, magazines, and to organise conferences and public meetings.
