Description

Side Lever Boat Engines for Land (9 items).

1048. Combe Delafield & Co., Westminster, London (QL). Oct., Nov. 1833, Jan. 1843, May 1850, Jan., Mar. 1852. 9 items.
30 horse power side lever boat engine for land, with 31½ inch cylinder, 3 foot stroke.

Reverse cross-sections of the engine and boiler houses, longitudinal section of the engine and boiler houses, plan of the engine and boiler houses showing situation of 26 horse engine, copper etc.; sketch plan of the boiler by Frederick Bennett; sketch of stairs and hand railing as made at Soho Foundry.
Also the following later items: sketch for new steam pipes to connect the old and new boilers - partially coloured original and reverse drawings, Jan. 1843; proposed Cornish boiler for the old engine - sheet of tracings, May 1850; new Cornish boiler for the old engine - coloured sections of the boiler and plan showing both engines, boilers and copper, Jan. 1852; plan and sections of boiler and apparatus - partially coloured reverse drawing, Mar. 1852. Most of the drawings bear letter codes.

For Combe Delafield & Co. Brewery, Castle St., Long Acre, St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London. The engine was actually made in 1827, but not sold to Combe Delafield & Co. until 1833. The firm bought a 10 horse sun and planet engine in 1787, which they had increased to 26 horse power [see Portfolio 5/27]. This is the beam engine depicted in the drawings to which the Cornish boiler was applied in the 1850s.
