Local Boards of Health were first set up in 1848 to administer services which related to public health in populated areas not covered by Borough Councils. Fairfield Local Board was established in 1858, though the first surviving minutes date from 1872 when the Public Health Act of that year designated local boards as urban sanitary authorities. Urban Sanitary Authorities became Urban District Councils under the Local Government Act, 1894.
Fairfield Urban District Council was absorbed into the new Borough of Buxton in 1916.
