Administrative / biographical background

Evelyn Wright nee Heywood was born 8 August, 1907 in Oldham. When she was six months old her father died, and then, when she was six her mother had an "accident" so she was put in a workhouse for 8 months until a place in an orphanage was found. She was in "Beckett House" (part of "Scattered Homes") until 1919 when her mother married again when she was 13, went hall time in Lamb's Mill (Oldham) which was later Ross Mill.

During the 1930s worked in many different Mills as a ring spinner. In the 1940s she went to work for Hawker Sidley as an inspector of stores. She married Henry Wright in 1934. He was born in 1907 in Oldham, started worked ½ time when he was 13 at Bank Top Mill, then Windsor Mill and Ordsall Mills as a spinner. He was in the Navy during the war.
