Administrative / biographical background

The Chester Paxton Society, named after the gardener and architect, Sir Joseph Paxton (1801-65), was founded in 1889, with headquarters at the Grosvenor Museum.

The society's main objective was to encourage horticulture in Cheshire and North Wales, especially the cultivation of hardy fruits and to this end, arranged lectures and demonstrations at various centres in the area. Other activities of the society included annual exhibitions in the autumn and lectures and practical papers in the winter covering almost every aspect of horticulture. The society was dissolved in 1921.
