Description

Folios 83-84. Internal memorandum of the Local Government Board entitled Mitford and Launditch Union, Return of pauper lunatics, parliamentary grant.
Draft letter from the Local Government Board to Walter May Barton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union acknowledging receipt on 3 February 1885 of the return of the numbers and cost of maintenance of pauper lunatics chargeable to the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union during the year ended Michaelmas 1884. It states that whilst the guardians are claiming repayment from the parliamentary grant for 53 weeks in respect of 43 lunatics, the grant is an annual one and no repayment can be made for more than 52 weeks in any one year unless the claim for the year immediately preceding was for 51 weeks only. As the guardians were repaid for 52 weeks at year ended Michaelmas 1883, the Board can only repay for 52 weeks this time and have therefore deducted £8 12s from the total amount claimed.
Annotated: 'Acknowledge and forward the usual letter to the guardians, pointing out that the Board cannot pay the claim for 53 weeks in 43 cases entered in the Return, and say that they will, therefore, deduct the sum £8 12s from the total amount claimed', 10 February 1885.
