Administrative / biographical background

Donor's maternal grandfather, David Whitfield, was born in c.1890 and came from Droylsden, Manchester. Hilda Nixon, donor's maternal grandmother, wife of David Whitfield, came from Haltwhistle in Northumberland. She was one of eleven children (including Jim, Molly, Dora, Kitty and Ada). David Whitfield used to run a coalyard in Ralf Street, Clayton, with his brother, Frederick Whitfield. He later sold out and became an engineer with Ferguson Palin. Mrs. Sellwood is the donor's mother, she has remarried.
