A mission belonging to the Cockhedge Mills was built close to this site in 1872. About 1908, the Wycliffe Congregational Church acquired the site for a second congregational church to replace the mission.
Elmwood Avenue Congregational School and Chapel opened in Sep 1913. The church remained in these premises until 1934 when a new church was erected at the junction of Elmwood Avenue and Oakwood Avenue. In 1935 Wycliffe Church granted full independence to its former mission.
