Title
F. Chambre to the Hon. Richard Hill.
Date
Petton, 7th May, 1725
Description

Since he received Hill's of the 29th he has seen Mr. Sherrard with Mr. Price at Drayton, with whom he has agreed to finish that mortgage at Midsummer. Mr. Sherrard is then to receive from Chambre £1,400 towards which Chambre thinks he can pay £500. This will leave £900 for Hill to furnish him with Mr. Powys usually requires a month's time for payment if he does it without a premium. Mr. Sherrard is content with Hill's terms of paying £5 unless by his punctual payment of interest he shall have abatement of 10s. Mr. Price has executed a declaration of trust as to Mr. Sherrard's present mortgage of £350 and Mr. Peggs bond of £200. These are all the securities he can find in his name.

Joseph goes on with the pool in Burreys pieces which should, weather permitting, be finished in about a month's or five weeks time. He has been enquiring about the spending of the money mentioned in the account Hill sent, and also £10. 11. 6. which Mr. Dicken has paid to Joseph.

Chambre goes every week or fortnight at most to superintend the business.

Hill has often mentioned that a parcel of rubbish lies on the East of Hill's house above the pool there and in the way of this new walk - there is no such thing and from the terrace in back court to the place where they take the old lane, 2 or 300 yards, the ground lies as well as it can be made, and Chambre advises the following of the old hollow way without thinking of filling it up, which will be a great expense and labour, even to do the small part Hill mentions. He has ordered Joseph, in time of rain, to take his 4 men from that work and employ them till fair weather in ordering that part of the lane which is taken in the walk, and in preparing holes for the planting of fire. He has not yet been able to answer Hill's enquiries about the price and size of such firs.

He waited on Lord Kilmorrey at Shavington who will pay off the principal and interest as soon as he can dispose of his house in Chester - he told him this was unsatisfactory. The house in Chester is not worth much above half their debt. The principal could be left until his lordship can pay, but the interest is demanded. He doubts whether anything can be done by fair means - his lordship is going abroad to travel. He has never received anything from Andrews of his old debt of £65 nor could get him to come near - Chambre has viewed his barn and buildings near Stone in Staffs. Instead of paying his old arrears which his father had unreasonably retained for repairs, he attacked Chambre for as much more repairs as under his management will amount to the like sum "this surprised and provoked me pretty much, for hee was to keep in repair at his own expence"

Chambre gave him notice to leave next lady day - the old debt is not recoverable by law because there has been no bond. He has made free of the little wood on the estate and has done as he liked, for no-one viewed it since Mr. John Hill's death "He is a canting fellow and I doubt will see work upon Mr. Price's good nature that this bluster of mine will come to nothing."

He encloses Davies' draft of the Gates, "wchich I doubt you'll think not plain enough"

His price is 5d per 1 lb. or 18 guineas in gross. "Hee will make them very plain at 4d"

Post script. Since he wrote he received the 3d. which Okes enclosed and the schedule of writings at Hawkstone.
