Description

The transcripts of Repton Priory deeds and associated items appear to be the working papers for an article. 'Repton Charters' published in the Derbyshire Archaeological Journal in 1932. The 17th and 18th century estate accounts for the Marriot estate in Ollerbrook, parish of Edale, the Edale headborough's accounts, 1663 and the 18th century rent receipts for the vaccary of Ollerbrook all relate in different ways to the activities of members of the Tymm family of Edale as farmers and parish officers. There also appears to be a family connection with Nicholas Cresswell who refers in his published diary to 'my uncle Tym'. Nicholas Cresswell, born at Crowden Booth in Edale, is best known for the journal he wrote while he was in America from 1774 to 1777.

After the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Cresswell returned to his family home and estate in Edale. This correspondence, dating from 1780-1783, with two contemporary antiquarians reflects Cresswell's interests in the antiquities and archaeology of the High Peak, and there is also a passing reference to his respect for native Americans and their culture. Henry Howe Bemrose (1827-1912) philanthropist and business man, was Mayor of Derby, MP for Derby 1895-1900 and knighted 1897. Llewellynn Jewitt (1816-1886) was a distinguished Derbyshire antiquarian and topographer.
