Description (What the record is about)
-
Papers relating to the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition.
SSC/132/1 - 5 diaries describing the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 23 Dec. 1914 to 12 Feb. 1917.
SSC/132/2 - 1 volume, typescript of the above diaries.
SSC/132/3 - 1 notebook, 'Log of Taroona Camp'. Taroona, on the outskirts of Hobart, Tasmania, was selected by the Ross Sea Party for the quarantine of the Party’s dogs prior to sailing. This manuscript diary, with pen & ink illustrations, outlines the activities during that early period of the Expedition. The men regularly had to deal with fighting between the dogs; Ninnis notes in one of his diaries that he has been roused in the early hours and pitch blackness to separate battling animals - at some risk to his personal well-being. The opening shows sketches of both sledge design and of their method of harnessing the dogs. The log also includes a loose manuscript listing of the dogs by name. Ninnis bequeathed these volumes, along with two photograph albums and other documentation relating to the Antarctic, to the Society upon his death in 1956. They provide a unique record of the ‘other’ ITAE party, complementing Hurley’s work on the far side of the continent.
