Administrative / biographical background

In May 1937, Oppé was employed by the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, to acquire drawings for their collection. He carried out this work in London, receiving a regular budget from the Gallery and earning commission on the items purchased. His remit encompassed British and non-British, pre-20th century drawings (rather than watercolours). This arrangement continued until Oppé's death in 1957.

Oppé's involvement with the Gallery was further expanded during the Second World War when he sent the most prized works from his collection there for safekeeping. They were returned around 1946.
