Folio 178. Letter from Walter May Barton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union, to the Local Government Board. He writes in reply to their letter concerning the report of the district auditor as to a discrepancy between the totals of rateable value in valuation list for East Dereham and the poor rate. He explains that the error was made because on 2 May 1884 the assistant overseer assumed that a supplemental valuation sent in by the overseer, at the end of April 1884, the same time as the valuation list, had been approved. He therefore included it in a poor rate to which he obtained the allowance and signatures of two justices and this thus caused an increase in the rateable value. In actual fact the supplemental valuation list had not been approved at a meeting of the Union assessment committee until 5 May 1884.
Annotated: 'Send copy of the correction to overseers for observations', 31 March 1885.
