Castleshaw Residential Centre was opened in May 1895 to give delicate and poverty-stricken children from Oldham's poorest homes a holiday in rural surroundings. It was enlarged in 1910 when heating was installed to make winter holidays possible. The Education Department took over the building in 1915 when Dame Sarah Lees paid £800 for alterations which changed it into a 22-bed sanatorium school. This ceased in 1936 when Strinesdale Sanatorium opened.
In 1958 it became a camp school run on youth-hostel lines. It was extended in 1960 and again in 1980 becoming the 'Castleshaw Centre', catering for more than 60 children.
