Administrative / biographical background

English lutenist and musicologist. A leading member of the early music revival a pupil and later an associate of Arnold Dolmetsch, she played a key role in the revival of the popularity of the lute and its music. She was a pupil of Dolmetsch and later, his associate. She was also, together with Ian Harwood, a founder of the Lute Society, a thriving organisation still active in promoting the lute and its repertoire among young players, and in encouraging research and performance. Throughout her life she taught and contributed regularly to the Lute Society Journal on every aspect of the lute and matters relating to historic performance practice.
