Description (What the record is about)
-
The site, which formed part of land leased to the Society of Friends for 1000 years in 1697, was initially leased in 1826 for 14 years by the Society to James Tracy Dunn of Lewes, schoolmaster for use as a school. The site was subsequently leased on 7 February 1862 for 99 years by the Society of Friends to the Lewes Bath Association Limited (incorporated on 5 October 1861). An Extraordinary General Meeting was held at the Company's offices at 17 High Street, Lewes on 13 January 1882 where it was decided to wind up the Company and to appoint Frederick Colvin of Lewes, actuary as the liquidator. The Borough of Lewes discussed acquiring the building for the purposes of Public Baths and Wash-houses and it was offered to the Borough by the liquidator on behalf of the Lewes Bath Association. The Borough subsequently decided not to accept offer and the leasehold premises were assigned by Colvin to Robert Lambe of Lewes, gent on 20 June 1882. In 1944 the Society of Friends assigned the remainder of the 1000 year term to the leaseholder Alfred Cottman of Lewes, house furnisher. (Trustees of the Friends Meeting House - Dunn; Trustees of the Friends Meeting House - The Lewes Bath Association Limited - Lambe - Cottman - Wightman and Company Limited.) SX 113427
