Rao Udai Singh of Jodhpur, the Mota Raja (1583-94). Mughal, c.1680. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Inscribed above in Persian: 'tasvir-i mota' ... (portrait of Mota ... (part obliterated)); numbered 26 in Persian inventory note; on reverse in nagari:' mota raja' (literally 'portly' raja). Gouache with gold; on an album leaf with plain and yellow-tinted borders; reinforced at edges with grey paper. 180 by 118 mm; page 373 by 231 mm. Reverse: a page of scattered lines of verse written in 'shikasta' calligraphy; 18th century. Rao Udai Singh stands in a field facing right, his hands folded over the hilt of a straight sword. He is dressed in a mauve jama with a 'talwar' and 'katar' at the waist and a buckler on his left. The background is brown with blue and white sky at the top.
