Newhaven National School for boys and girls was built in 1868 and is shown on the 25-inch Ordnance Survey map of 1872 on the northern side of Dacre Road and Church Road, now South Way. A new infants' school was built in South Road in 1885. From 1874 the schools were managed by the Newhaven School Board. In 1903, following the 1902 Education Act, they came under the control of the Education Department of East Sussex County Council
The Boys' School moved to a site on the Meeching Place Estate in 1902 and on reorganisation in 1951 became the secondary modern school. The Girls' School in Dacre Road became a junior mixed school in 1951 and closed in 1970 when the pupils were transferred to the new Meeching Valley County Junior School. The Infants' School closed in 1970 and its pupils transferred to the new Grays County Infants' School (E/SC/228)
