Includes: Carleton Hall up for sale, 1825; EH offered Rydal Mount, but declined, "having a Lease of this House" Temple Sowerby], do.; Mr Wordsworth is building a house at Rydal near Ivy Cottage, 20-28 Feb. 1826; Fletcher Fleming is marrying the Duke of Northumberland's former Agent's daughter, do.; Sir R Fleming's marriage might "reform him", and his new acquisition of the living of Windermere and residence there might get him "more into proper Society", do.; the Skirwith boundary case (Carlisle Assizes, Lady Fleming v. Mr Crackenthorpe), 27 March 1826; "the poet Wordsworth", says the Carlisle paper, has suffered by his London publishers' financial troubles, these delaying his present work's publication, do.; the Dowager Lady Fleming has given him notice to leave Rydal Mount, but he has bought a field nearby, to build a house there - this will upset your cousin, having them "so near her, after the very unpleasant terms they have so long been upon, I cannot imagin, how he has managed to make the purchase, in the Village", do.; Fletcher [Fleming]'s new abode, on the Loughrigg side, do.; Mrs Taylor dead, do.; affliction at Calgarth - their Isleworth aunt's death, do.; "Mr Dikes" sued by Maj Tolson for possession of property, do.; no need now for me to quit my house here when the lease expires, do.; Elections: riots etc., 12 June 1826 - [aspects of the Shaddongate Riot]; HJ to let, (advertised by the Hasells) - as Dalemain now has 3 Hasell families in it, perhaps one of them would take HJ as tenants, do.; Appleby Election doings, do.; "the Bowness Living" - the unpleasantness caused by Johnson's neglect, do.; riot at Appleby last Saturday - "the Military" sent for from Carlisle to deal with "a set of unimployed Weavers and other ill disposed" do.; William Hudleston's illness - comments, 18 July 1826; Miss Morley's marriage to the Rev Mr Wilson, a clergyman in the South - the couple have sent me a fine piece of cake, do.; Mrs Stanley's' birth of a daughter, do.; her uncle, the Bishop of Durham, lately dined at Penruddock; Mr Stanley paid his respects there, then "walked down to take a view of Hutton John, and of which, I am glad to say, he gave me a good account" - all neat - but did not go into the house, do.; Sackville's windfall of £3000, do.; marriage at Belle Isle (Curwen), do.; the Skirwith case concerns the mines there - Mr Crackenthorpe finds he has no claim, has withdrawn, do.; the first boundary perambulation for years of Skirwith and Kirkland will be ridden on 16-17 August, do.; Ponsonby less grand than when he was Sheriff, do.; on dorse of this letter of 18 July 1826, a letter from E Hughes, AFH's cousin, written cross, autograph; your friend Mr Sewell's visit, 19 Sept. 1826 (dated from Rydal Hall); Lady Fleming's drive to Coniston, "to view the old Hall at a distance", do.; she's becoming [a recluse] again, do.; no moves at Rydal Mount - I have declined its tenancy as the Wordsworths' successor, and "the Wordsworths have all ready for building just below the Chapel" [=Rydal Church], tho' not without hopes of remaining on", as the lesser evil, do.; Sir R Fleming expects his first-born soon, do.; the dorse of this letter carries a short letter from Elizabeth Hughes; EH's stay on Belle Isle, and tour thereabouts, 21 Nov. 1826; Miss Knott's serious illness, do.; Curwen news (Belle Isle and "Bell Grange"), do.; EH's visit to the Wilsons of Abbot Hall, do.; the Wilsons' works at Rigmaden, for summer use, do.; improvements at Dallam Tower, do.; the Willoughbys no longer so disgustingly full of "Self-consequence", do.; Mr Stanley's daughter is ill - a Newcastle doctor consulted, do.; a London elopement for Margaret [Stanley] do.; Mr Graham of Arthuret widowered at 70, with 8 children, do. Mr Fleming (Rayrigg) is now Sir Richard's curate at Bowness, by leave of the Archbishop of York, do.; Sir Richard (at Grasmere) has a daughter, do.; all hope that his wife will "keep Sir R from drinking", do.; Mr Havill to be Sheriff, though a Tax gatherer", do.; HJ, sub-let by the Grahams to the Hasells, is still unlet, do.
