[Account of Hugh Salford, Master of the Guild of [the Holy Cross, the Blessed Mary, and St. John Baptist, 8-9 Henry VI]

(The beading of the Account is lost, but the Master is called Hugh in the body of the document, and William Beoley and William Staffordshir (who were Proctors in 8-9 Henry VI.), are referred to as the Proctors for the year for which the Account is drawn up.)

Delivery of moneys. (40s 8d for five cloaks given to the 5 Chaplains of the Guild, four of the cloaks contain 3 yards of cloth each and one 3¼ yards; 6d "pro tonsione dicti panni"; a payment for "tribus scapleris" bought for the poor men ("pauperibus hominibus") with the making of the same; a payment to William Beoley and William Staffordshir, Proctors of the Guild, for the expense of the Feast this year, &c.)

Expenses incurred for divers necessaries

(Victuals bought for the Hall for the conference ("colloqium") held there by Hugh the Master and the Aldermen of the Guild, and others, on Monday next after the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross "anno suprascriptis," to consult about the lands and tenements of Alice Ulbarowe; payments for bread, beer, beef and mutton, a "marybone," 3 geese (15d); a young pig (porcellus, 4d); "otemele," &c.; payments for bread, beer, &c., for the supper "pro magnat'" on the same day in the house of Hugh the Master, &c.)

[Heading illegible.] (Expenses incurred by Hugh, the Master, and Master John Harrys, with a servant, in riding to Alvechurch to speak with the Bishop about the business of the Chapel ("Capell'") on Tuesday next after Michaelmas Day this year; payments for gifts to the Registrar of the Bishop, and to the Rector of K[em]essy, 12d for two horses hired for a day and a half, &c. Beer bought for the counting house on divers occasions, 9d.)

[No heading.] (The expenses of the Master and William Beoley in riding on two occasions to Evesham for the collection of money and for the reception of Brethren and Sisters into the Fraternity of the Guild; 12d for fresh fish sent to Blockelly to the Bishop of Worcester, on Saturday next [before] the Feast of St. Faith the Virgin in this year; the expenses of the Master, Master John Harrys, and William Beoley, in riding to Alvechurch; the expenses of Hugh, the Master, and others in riding to Warwick for the sealing of the deeds relating to the tenements of Alice Ulbarowe; the expenses incurred for victuals at the conference ("colloqium") between H ... and Nicholas Leke, Chaplain, for bread, beer, herrings red and white, salt eels, salt salmon, "stokfish," oil, a "pekerel" (8d); fresh fish and oysters; 12d the expenses of the King's Escheator being here to hold an inquisition upon certain lands and tenements of the Guild; the expenses of Hugh, the Master, and William Beoley, in riding to Etyngden, Pillardyngton, Fulredy, Whatcote, Brayles, and Campeden; 12d for a messenger sent to Evesham about the business of the Guild, &c.)

[Wages and board of the carpenters.] (Payments for the wages and board of certain carpenters and sawyers, and a labourer. The payments extend over nine weeks, and the account of each week is kept separately. The first account is for the first week in Lent this year beginning on Monday. The payments for food for the first six weeks are for bread, beer, herrings, fish, onions and garlick, mustard, salt, "otemele," fruit, white peas, and 11 "symnell." Meat, butter, cheese, and eggs appear in the account for the seventh week. In the eighth week there is a payment of 12d for 5 pairs of gloves given to the carpenters.)

Necessary Expenses. (12d for repairing the "shafte orascopii" with iron work; [5]d for repairing the orasascopium; 6d for repairing the "campanile" of the same; 10d for "lyme, sclateris, and crestes;" 16d, the wages of the workmen repairing the defects there; 6d for making a chain "pro ligatione unius torcheti" to the altar of the Holy Mary in the parish church of Stratford; 2d for making a "lache" for the door of the pantry ("boteria") in the Counting House; 7d for repairing the locks and keys of a chest, in which the treasure and the muniments of the Guild are kept; 7d for mending the locks of a chest of the Blessed Mary being in the Chapel in the Church of Stratford; the wages of 2 carpenters hired for 3 days to make tables (mensales) and the door[s] of the pantry and a "basyngbord," dressers, "scanna," and "shelfes" in the counting house and the pantry; 4s 4d for linen cloth for making a new alb and two "amyes"; 1d for the lantern in the chapel; 1d for a cord for the bell there; 12d for mending a broken cross; 6d for "gemewes" bought for "basynbord"; 4d for a "hasta" bought for the cross; 16d for colouring and painting the same, &c.)
