Description (What the record is about)
-
Collection of 65 loose prints, 1-28 by Randolph Bezzant Holmes of Peshawar, showing the scenery and people of the North-West Frontier. Prints 29-65 are miscellaneous snapshots from various parts of India (and present-day Pakistan), with a few photographs taken in Baghdad. Prints 1-9 are part of the Third Afghan War Series 1919, listed in the Holmes catalogue and show views in the Khyber Pass (though not military activity) during this period. Prints 10-15 are also views in the Khyber Pass up to the Afghan border and probably relate to approximately the same period, or earlier. Prints 16-24 are portraits of Pathan and Afridi types of the North-West Frontier. Prints 25-28 are topographical views of Peshawar, Nowshera and Attock. The collection was compiled by William Smith Fyfe, a Scottish engineer who went to India in 1910 to assist his cousin Fred Smith with a dairy farm project established by the latter for the army in India. William Fyfe returned to England in the mid-1930s and settled in Letchworth, where he later set up the Letchworth Hill Laundry. A number of the images from this collection were exhibited at Letchworth Museum and Art Gallery in 2002.
