A Burial Board for St Michael's parish was established in 1854 under the provisions of the Burial Act 1853 (16 and 17 Vic c134) and a joint Burial Board for All Saints and St Thomas at Cliffe was established in 1872. In April 1913 they were replaced by a Lewes Borough Burial Board; in 1914 the two separate cemeteries were renamed the 'eastern part' (formerly St Michael's) and the 'western part' (formerly All Saints and St Thomas at Cliffe).
