Administrative / biographical background

The Pyncombe Charity was established by the will of Gertrude Pyncombe of Poughill, Devon in 1730. The will provided that any surplus income, after payments had been made for various poor and educational needs in Poughill and elsewhere in Devon, was to be spent in augmenting livings, firstly of parishes where the testator had estates and then anywhere else in England. Thomas Carew of Crowcombe Court was one of the Trustees of this Charity as were his successors at Crowcombe.
