Maharaja Ranbir Singh (1857-85) of Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu, c.1880. Presented by Miss Ina C. Turnbull, 16 February 1948. Inscribed on reverse: 'His Highness the Maharaja Jummoo and Kashmir. G.C.S.I.,' 'C'.'I.E.'. Gouache; mauve mount with yellow margin and crimson and blue rules; dark blue border with Kangra-type floral scroll pattern. 210 by 158 mm; page 250 by 195 mm. Published: W.G. Archer (1973), I, 212, no.75, and II, 160. Raja Ranbir Singh wearing a deep yellow dress and heavily bejewelled pink coat, sits on a throne holding a sword in a crimson scabbard with one foot resting on a foot-stool. Around his neck he wears the order of a Knight Grand Commander of the Star of India. Behind him stands an attendant also in a deep yellow dress holding a peacock-feather fan. On the floor is a gold and crimson rug; pale blue background. Note: Copy of a photograph by Bourne and Shepherd of Ranbir Singh taken at Lord Lytton's Delhi Durbar, January 1877 (Photo 99 (32)).
