Administrative / biographical background

Royal Lodge of Friendship was granted a warrant by the Moderns' or premier Grand Lodge on 15 December 1789 to meeet as No. 556, although a group was meeting in Gibraltar under a provincial warrant from 1788. The early meeting place of the lodge in Gibraltar is unknown but by 1860 it met at Freemasons' Hall, Glyn's Buildings, Gibraltar. In 1789 the Lodge met as Calpean Lodge but was renamed as Lodge of Friendship in 1815. The Lodge is known now as Royal Lodge of Friendship. The Lodge met at the Gibraltar Masonic Institute, 47a Prince Edward's Road, Gibraltar after 1936.
