Description (What the record is about)
-
Letter of James Thompson, Worshipful Master, John Neen, Senior Warden and Robert Huston, Junior Warden, unnamed Lodge held in the Royal Horse Artillery, Plough Inn, Colchester to Robert Leslie, Grand Secretary, 28 Token House Yard, London seeking information about two lodges, one meeting in the 4th Regiment and the other in the 5th Regiment of Dragoon Guards (Queen's Own Hussars/Royal Irish Dragoons), meeting under the Grand Lodge of Ireland which will not allow intervisitation and mentions a division between lodges granted warrants from Dublin and Ulster. Seek information about whether the Lodge can admit them as visitors. Seek permission to join a procession to church on St John's Day and details about the burial of members according to Masonic rites. Endorsed with draft reply dated 29 July from Robert Leslie explaining that a resolution was made after Alexander Seton, Deputy Grand Secretary, formed a break away Grand Lodge of Ireland in Ulster [the Seton Secession] not to accept any membership certificates issued by lodges awarded warrants after September 1806 by the Grand Lodge formed by Seton. Leslie states he is unable to answer any letters forwarded by members or lodges grated warrants by Seton's break away Grand Lodge of Ireland, at Ulster. Leslie mentions that the Antients' Grand Lodge made a procession to church for a sermon to mark the last St John's Day celebrations and then dined at Canonbury, Islington, London but that processions generally have been discontinued in London unless the Grand Secretary issues a summons to attend. Apologises for not responding sooner due to the pressure of professional and Grand Lodge business affairs.
