Folio 351. Draft letter from the Local Government Board to Walter May Barton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union. They acknowledge his letter of 20 January 1880, in which he requested their consent under section 37 of the 29 & 30 Vic c 188, [Industrials Schools Act1866], to the guardians of the Mitford and Launditch Poor Law Union contributing 3s per week towards the maintenance in the Fakenham Industrial School of Esther Walker, described by him as about 19 years of age. They point out that assuming Walker's age is correct, there does not appear to be any authority for the proposed payment. The section he referred to only enables the guardians to contribute towards the maintenance of children detained in industrial schools on their application and under section 17 of the same act, they are only empowered to apply for the detention of children who are apparently under 14 years of age.
