Administrative / biographical background

The Hampshire Home of Recovery was opened in 1922 to provide for surgical semi-convalescents. It was based at Stoneham Park House, purchased with money given from the Red Cross. Originally it only accommodated men, with many of the patients being ex-servicemen from the First World War, however a women's ward was also opened in 1928.

During the Second World War, the Home became a hospital under the Emergency Medical Service, where in addition to its usual patients, it also treated service casualties and air raid victims. The Home was transferred to Southampton Group Hospital Committee under the 1946 N.H.S Act, and from November 1950 became known as Fred Woolley House.
