865. James Amos & Co., St. Croix (ZQ) and James Norris, St. Croix (DW). Dec. 1812, Jan., May, Jun. 1813, Sep. 1816. 5 items.
Two 10 horse power independent crank engines, with 19¾ inch cylinders, 2½ foot strokes, parallel motions, cast iron beams, cast iron connecting rods.
Also mule gin and pump work.Reverse side view of the engine and cross-section of the boiler, plan of the engine and boiler, end view of the engine, longitudinal section of the boiler. The drawings bear letter codes.
Also "A Plan of the Hogensborg Estate as far as relates to the sources of the Different Springs" - coloured map and notes by Daniel Monroe marked "This drawing of the situation of Mr. Söbötker's 10 horse engine was received from Messrs. Amos & Co. on the 6 Jan. 1813"; mule gin - partially shaded drawing marked "Wheel for Messrs. Amos & Co. from Mr. Rennie's drawing, May 1813"; general drawing of the pump work and pipe for Mr. Söbötker - reverse drawing, Jun. 1813 (this drawing shows the mule gin).Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 658, 702. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 220, 226.
For Mr. Söbötker, Hogensborg Estate, St. Croix, ordered by James Amos & Co. (engine ZQ) and for J. & J. Cumming, St. Croix, ordered by James Norris of 16 Wallbrooke, London (engine DW). Sugar plantation engines [?]. The drawings were made in Dec. 1812 for Amos' engine, and re-used in 1816 for Norris' engine. Amos' engine was omitted from the List of Engines made at Soho. Henry Hazleton allocated separate portfolio numbers to both engines despite the fact that they did not have separate drawings; Amos' was Portfolio 865 and Norris' was Portfolio 866.
