Administrative / biographical background

The Hadlow estate, assembled by the Day family of Hadlow House and London, was sold, following an order in Day v Day in chancery, to John Haskins of Elm Grove, Ventnor, Isle of Wight for £38,500 in 1860. He sold the estate to the Earl of Abergavenny for £43,000 in 1870

The Abergavenny Estate sold the Hadlow estate for £112,000 to Alexandrina Peckover of Bank House, Wisbech, the surviving daughter of Alexander Peckover, Baron Peckover (1830-1919) in 1947. The purchase was completed in 1948 and Miss Peckover was dead by 1949
